Train Derails After Collision with Stationary Goods Train in Tamil Nadu; No Casualties Reported

*Chennai/New Delhi, October 11, 2024* – At least 12 coaches of the Bagmati Express derailed after colliding with a stationary goods train at Kavarapettai, Tamil Nadu, on Friday night. Southern Railway officials confirmed that no casualties or life-threatening injuries were reported, although several passengers sustained minor injuries.The accident occurred around 8:30 PM when the 12578 Bagmati Express, traveling from Mysuru in Karnataka to Darbhanga in Bihar, crossed Ponneri station and was heading toward Kavarapettai. According to railway officials, the express train was given a green signal to proceed through the mainline. However, instead of continuing on the main track, the train unexpectedly veered onto a loop line, where a freight train was parked.”While entering Kavarapettai station, the train crew experienced a sudden heavy jerk,” a Southern Railway official explained. “At a speed of 75 kmph, the express train rammed into the stationary goods train on the loop line.”The force of the collision caused 12 coaches of the express train to derail. Emergency services were immediately deployed, and an initial report confirmed that six passengers suffered fractures and bruises. They were promptly treated, and authorities confirmed that none of the injuries were life-threatening.An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the error that led to the train entering the loop line instead of the mainline, as per the signal.
