The Telangana government is preparing to introduce smart electricity meters across the state. Smart meters will reportedly be installed for all new electricity connections, while existing connections will also be converted in phases.
The smart meters are expected to automatically record electricity consumption at midnight on the last day of every month and send the readings for bill generation.
The distribution companies (DISCOMs) are also considering recovering the cost of installing smart meters from consumers. In addition, prepaid smart meters are proposed to be made mandatory for government offices across Telangana.
