Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh: The Allahabad High Court has ruled that students cannot insist on wearing a hijab along with the prescribed school uniform if it violates the institution’s dress code.
The case involved a minor student, Sukaina Rizvi, who had sought permission to wear a hijab with the school’s prescribed uniform. She had passed Class 10 from Tagore School but was denied admission to Class 11 over the issue.
The school maintained that she could be admitted only if she agreed to follow the prescribed dress code without wearing the hijab.
The High Court observed that schools are attended by students from different communities and that a common uniform helps maintain equality and uniformity among students. The court said an individual student cannot be permitted to deviate from the prescribed dress code according to personal preference.
The ruling effectively upheld the school’s position that adherence to its uniform policy is a condition for admission.
