Putin Calls for UN Reform, Greater Global South Representation at SCO Summit
Russian President Vladimir Putin has called for improving the effectiveness of the United Nations. He made the remarks at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on Tuesday.
Putin said the UN should adapt to the changing political and economic realities of the world. He also backed greater representation for countries from the Global South and East.
The Russian president stressed that the UN should continue playing a central role in international affairs. He said its potential has not yet been fully realised.
Putin also called for expanding representation within UN bodies, including the Security Council. He argued that the organisation must reflect major changes taking place in global politics and economics.
According to Putin, the UN Charter should remain a key foundation of international law. He also described the organisation as an important platform for reconciling the interests of different countries.
Putin Backs Multipolar World Order
Putin said the emergence of a new multipolar world order is an irreversible process. He linked the UN’s future role to this changing international environment.
He also pointed to regional organisations in Asia, Africa and Latin America. According to him, such groups are becoming part of a broader multipolar global structure.
The remarks came during the SCO’s expanded “SCO Plus” meeting in Bishkek. The meeting focused on the role of the UN in shaping what the organisers described as a more balanced world order.
The 26th SCO summit brought together leaders and representatives from several countries. Discussions covered security, trade, investment, energy, technology and wider international cooperation.
Putin’s comments come amid growing calls for reforms in major international institutions. His proposal specifically highlights a larger role for emerging powers in global decision-making.
