Tamil Nadu Announces Olympic Nagaram, Motor Sports City and ₹1,200-Crore Assembly Complex
Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has announced a major expansion of sports and administrative infrastructure during the ongoing Assembly session.
The government plans to develop Tamil Nadu Olympic Nagaram along with a state-of-the-art Motor Sports City. The projects are aimed at creating world-class sporting facilities and developing young talent.
Motor Sports City to Target Global Racing Events
The proposed Motor Sports City will be designed to meet international specifications. It is expected to support major racing competitions, including Formula 1, Formula 2, Formula 3 and Formula 4.
The project will not focus only on international events. The government also plans to identify promising young racers and provide them with professional training.
The broader goal is to create Indian racing talent capable of competing on the global stage.
Tamil Nadu already has a strong motorsport ecosystem. Chennai is home to the Madras International Circuit at Irungattukottai, while the city has also hosted major racing events in recent years.
Officials expect the proposed facilities to generate wider economic benefits. These could include new jobs, increased tourism and stronger demand across the state’s specialised automotive manufacturing sector.
Olympic Nagaram to Strengthen Grassroots Sports
The Olympic Nagaram is being planned as an integrated sports hub. It will include modern sporting infrastructure and advanced training facilities.
The government aims to use the project to identify athletes at a young age. They would then receive structured training to compete at national and international levels.
The wider sports plan is also linked to Tamil Nadu’s goal of producing more athletes capable of winning medals at the Olympics and other major international competitions.
New Assembly and Secretariat Complex in Chennai
The government has also announced plans for a new Legislative Assembly and Secretariat complex in Chennai.
The proposed complex will cover around 20 lakh square feet. The estimated project cost is ₹1,200 crore, according to reports on the Assembly announcement.
The new administrative facility will follow modern fire-safety requirements. It will also incorporate accessibility standards for persons with disabilities.
Green building standards are expected to form part of the design as well.
The complex will provide adequate parking facilities and convention halls. Public service centres and modern amenities for government officials are also planned.
Government Departments to Come Under One Roof
A key objective is to bring different government departments together within a single integrated administrative complex.
The move is expected to improve coordination between departments. It could also make government services easier to access for the public.
The proposal comes after several earlier attempts to create a larger Assembly-cum-Secretariat facility in Chennai. Tamil Nadu has previously operated a new Assembly and Secretariat complex at the Omandurar Government Estate.
With the latest announcement, the state government is seeking to combine modern governance infrastructure with an ambitious sports-development programme.
