Delhi Court Sends Swatantra Bhardwaj to One-Day Judicial Custody in Jantar Mantar Assault Case

New Delhi: A Delhi court on Sunday sent Swatantra Bhardwaj to one-day judicial custody in a case linked to the alleged assault of the father of a Dalit student activist during a protest at Jantar Mantar.

The order was passed by Duty Magistrate Anjali Singh of the Patiala House Courts. Bhardwaj was produced before the court through video conferencing, according to court reports.

Delhi Police had sought 14 days of judicial custody. However, Bhardwaj was produced before the Duty Magistrate, who ordered one day of judicial custody. The question of further custody is expected to be considered by the concerned court on Monday.

What is the Jantar Mantar assault case?

The case concerns an alleged assault on the father of a teenage student activist during a protest associated with the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) at Jantar Mantar.

An FIR was initially registered under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Later, provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act were added to the case. Criminal intimidation provisions have also reportedly been invoked.

A separate POCSO case has also been registered against Bhardwaj, according to reports.

Bhardwaj arrested in Uttar Pradesh

Bhardwaj was arrested in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, on Saturday. His arrest followed growing demands for action over the alleged assault and comments attributed to him in a podcast.

The controversy intensified after a video circulated online in which Bhardwaj allegedly spoke about the incident. The remarks prompted renewed demands for his arrest and further investigation.

Bhardwaj has disputed the allegations. He has claimed that his actions were in self-defence and denied deliberately attacking the man.

Court proceedings to continue

The one-day judicial custody order is the latest development in the case. Further proceedings are expected before the designated court.

The allegations against Bhardwaj remain subject to investigation and judicial proceedings. No finding of guilt has been made by the court at this stage.
