Opposition Parties Protest GST on Insurance Premiums in Parliament

On Tuesday, leaders from the opposition coalition ‘Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance’ (INDIA) staged a protest in the Parliament House complex against the 18 percent Goods and Services Tax (GST) on life and health insurance premiums. Demonstrators, including MPs from the Congress, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress, Shiv Sena (Uttar Pradesh), and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, gathered in front of the ‘Makar Dwar’ of Parliament, brandishing placards and chanting slogans like ‘GST abolish karo’.Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, NCP chief Sharad Pawar, and other prominent MPs participated in the protest. Congress leader Pramod Tiwari criticized the tax as a “shroud tax,” describing it as a “big loot” and pledging the INDIA alliance’s strong opposition to the GST on insurance premiums.The issue was recently highlighted by Trinamool Congress MPs in Parliament. Trinamool Congress chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also addressed the matter directly with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman through a letter.In response, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has joined the call for a tax removal. He wrote to Sitharaman, conveying concerns from the Nagpur Division Life Insurance Corporation Employees Union regarding the impact of the GST on the insurance sector.
