**New Delhi** — Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative that could reshape the telecommunications landscape in India. In collaboration with Viasat, a global satellite communication company, BSNL has introduced ‘Direct to Device’ (Detudi) technology, enabling users to make phone calls without the need for a SIM card or mobile towers. This innovative technology allows smartphones, smartwatches, and other smart devices to connect directly to a satellite network, providing continuous and reliable communication, particularly in rural and remote areas. The system has already completed successful trials, demonstrating its capability to maintain connectivity even where traditional mobile infrastructure is unavailable. The Detudi technology is compatible with both Android and iOS devices, ensuring wide accessibility. It aims to enhance communication for users who often face connectivity challenges due to the lack of mobile towers. By allowing direct satellite connections, BSNL provides a solution akin to satellite phones, offering uninterrupted service regardless of location.A noteworthy achievement during the trials included a successful phone call made via satellite over a distance of 36,000 kilometers, showcasing the potential of this technology to redefine long-distance communication. With this launch, BSNL aims to position itself as a leader in satellite communication services, potentially challenging the dominance of established players like Reliance and Airtel. As the telecommunications sector evolves, BSNL’s ‘Direct to Device’ technology represents a significant step forward in ensuring connectivity for all, particularly in underserved regions.
