Doctors at Secunderabad Gandhi Hospital achieved a rare medical feat by saving the life of a 37-year-old auto driver who swallowed eight shaving blades after a family dispute. What makes the case remarkable is that the doctors removed the sharp metal pieces without performing surgery.
The Incident
The patient, identified as *Mohammed Khaja, a resident of Moula Ali Housing Board Colony, reportedly acted in a fit of rage after a quarrel with his family on **August 16. In a moment of despair, he broke *eight shaving blades into pieces and swallowed them.
Soon after, Khaja complained of severe stomach pain and broke down, fearing for his life. Alarmed, his family members immediately rushed him to Gandhi Hospital for treatment.
Rare Procedure Without Surgery
A team led by *Professor Dr. Sunil Kumar, Head of General Medicine, conducted *X-rays and CT scans, which confirmed that 16 sharp blade fragments were lodged in Khaja’s stomach. Initially, doctors considered endoscopy but dropped the idea due to the high risk of injury to the esophagus and internal organs.
Instead, they adopted a *specialized medical procedure using Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPI). Khaja was kept on complete fasting with intravenous fluids. Over the next *three days, the blades slowly moved through the digestive tract and were expelled naturally through stool.
Follow-up scans confirmed that no fragments were left inside. The patient responded well and made a complete recovery.
Patient Discharged Safely
Speaking to the media, *Dr. Sunil, Additional Superintendent of Gandhi Hospital, said the patient was *discharged on August 21 after successful recovery. He praised the team’s coordinated effort in handling one of the most critical cases without resorting to surgery.
Khaja’s case is now being hailed as a rare medical success story, demonstrating both medical expertise and advanced patient care. Locals and well-wishers have applauded the doctors for saving his life under such extreme circumstances.
