*New Delhi, September 20, 2024:* A delegation from the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) met with the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, in a session held at the Lok Sabha Committee room yesterday evening. The meeting was convened following an invitation from the JPC dated September 11, 2024.The delegation was led by Maulana Khalid Saifullah Rahmani, President of AIMPLB, and included key members such as General Secretary Maulana Mohd. Fazlur Rahim Mujaddidi, Senior Advocate and Executive Committee Member M.R. Shamshad, spokesperson Dr. S.Q.R. Ilyas, and Prof. (Dr.) Saud Alam Qasmi, both of whom also serve on the Executive Committee of the Board.During the meeting, the delegation presented both oral and written submissions on the potential legal and social implications of the proposed amendments to the Waqf Act. Maulana Rahmani and Prof. Qasmi raised concerns about the possible challenges if the amendments were passed, while Mr. Shamshad provided a detailed explanation of the legal ramifications. Advocate Arijit Sarkar assisted in the presentation.The delegation emphasized the position of Waqf in Islamic Sharia, explaining how the proposed changes could affect the Muslim community’s religious and legal framework. A written submission from AIMPLB had already been shared with the JPC prior to the meeting, and members of the committee reportedly appreciated the clarity it provided.Although the specifics of the discussions remain confidential due to parliamentary protocol, AIMPLB stated that the message of the Muslim community’s opposition to the amendments had been conveyed effectively.
