In a significant move to revitalize the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP), the Union Ministry of Steel on Friday announced an additional Rs. 2,500 crore infusion to support the plant’s operations, which have been hindered by a severe shortage of raw materials. This comes on the heels of a Rs. 500 crore release on Thursday, bringing the total aid to Rs. 3,000 crore in just two days. The fresh funds are aimed at addressing critical operational needs and settling legitimate payments, a stipulation emphasized by the Ministry. The State Bank of India (SBI) has been entrusted with overseeing the disbursement and utilization of these funds, ensuring they are used efficiently. SBI has indicated that the Rs. 2,500 crore will be made available to the plant by September 23rd, positioning the plant for a swift recovery.Currently, only one of the plant’s three blast furnaces is in operation, with two shut down due to the lack of raw materials. However, with the new financial boost and a renewed commitment from the Ministry of Steel to ensure a steady supply of raw materials, orders have been given to restart and operate the two idle blast furnaces at full capacity. The Ministry has further directed that all maintenance work across departments be completed by the end of October, setting the stage for full-scale production from November. This initiative is seen as a major step towards restoring VSP to its peak operational capabilities, and it reflects the government’s commitment to supporting the steel industry as a critical component of the nation’s economic infrastructure.
