An Indian-origin businessman, Dhiru Ramani (75), was reportedly released after being kidnapped in Mali, Africa, following a ransom settlement of ₹44 crore.
Originally from Dhar village in Gujarat’s Amreli district, Ramani’s family has been in the diamond business since 1980. After settling in the United States, the family expanded its business globally and entered the mining sector around two years ago.
Ramani had been supervising mining operations at a gold mine in Mali when he was allegedly abducted in April. Two months later, the kidnappers contacted his family in the US and initially demanded ₹100 crore for his release.
After around 10 days of negotiations, the family agreed to pay ₹44 crore. Following the payment, Ramani, along with a domestic worker and an electrician who were also held captive, was released safely
According to reports, the family secured his release privately without involving any department of the Indian government.
