Students at the Mahbubabad campus of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Hyderabad (JNTUH) staged a protest on Tuesday, demanding proper drinking water and washroom facilities. The students marched through the campus and nearby streets, raising slogans of “We want justice.”
According to JNTUH PRO Shravan G, the drinking water pipeline supplying the girls’ hostel was damaged during the construction of a nearby tribal welfare institution in April. Although the issue began at the end of the previous academic year, it became severe after classes resumed on July 6.
The university has four hostels—three for boys and one for girls. The water and sanitation issues have been reported only in the girls’ hostel. Officials also believe that increased admissions have put additional pressure on the hostel’s washroom facilities, and the university is planning to arrange another hostel building to ease overcrowding.
Government officials visited the campus on Tuesday and assured students that the issues would be resolved within 10–15 days. In the meantime, drinking water will be supplied through water cans.
