A recent statement by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat has sparked intense political discussion nationwide. During a book launch event in Nagpur on July 9, Bhagwat recalled an incident involving senior RSS ideologue Moropant Pingle. The incident occurred during a felicitation ceremony when Pingle turned 75. According to Bhagwat, Pingle humorously noted that the shawl presented to him signified it was time to “move aside” and allow the younger generation to take over.
Though Bhagwat framed the moment as a reflection of humility and detachment from pride, his mention of the age “75” set political circles abuzz—especially because Prime Minister Narendra Modi turns 75 on September 17 this year.
Opposition Links Bhagwat’s Remark to PM Modi
Opposition parties, especially the Congress, were quick to respond. Congress MP Jairam Ramesh took a dig, calling the remark a “reminder” to the Prime Minister of his upcoming milestone birthday. He also noted that both Bhagwat and Modi will turn 75 in September, suggesting that both could consider stepping aside together.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut added fuel to the fire by recalling how several senior BJP leaders like L.K. Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi were retired from active politics once they reached the age of 75. Raut questioned whether the same standard would now apply to Modi, hinting at double standards within the BJP leadership.
Congress leader Pawan Khera, too, commented that perhaps it was time for Bhagwat and Modi to “pick up their bags” and lead by example.
RSS Responds: No Hidden Message for Modi
Amid rising speculation, RSS insiders clarified that Bhagwat’s statement was being taken out of context. They emphasized that the anecdote was shared to reflect the personality of Pingle and had no direct reference to Modi or any political leader. The Sangh maintained that there was no intended message about retirement or succession planning.
The organization stressed that while such reflections are not new in RSS circles, there is no official age bar that applies to political leaders, including the Prime Minister.
History of the 75-Year Rule in BJP
Though not codified, the “75-year norm” has long been considered an unwritten rule in the BJP. Several key leaders—including L.K. Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, and the late Jaswant Singh—were moved to advisory roles after crossing that threshold.
Interestingly, past RSS leaders have spoken about the need for generational change. Former RSS chief K. Sudarshan, who stepped down at 78, once suggested that even party stalwarts like Vajpayee and Advani should retire at 75. Yet, Prime Minister Modi has remained at the helm, with no signs of stepping down or being pushed aside by party leadership.
