Tirupati: Swetha Ghosh, who was undergoing treatment after an alleged suicide attempt in Chennai, died at a private hospital in Tirupati on Thursday night.
According to the available information, Swetha Ghosh, an employee of Chennai Fertility Centre on Nelson Manickam Road in Aminjikarai, Chennai, allegedly jumped from the fourth floor of the hospital building on August 13. She was immediately shifted to MGM Private Hospital in Chennai and was undergoing treatment in the ICU.
On August 20, she was shifted to Amara Hospital in Tirupati reportedly for better medical treatment. However, Swetha Ghosh died at the hospital at around 9 p.m. on August 21.
Her body was subsequently shifted to the mortuary at Ruia Hospital in Tirupati for post-mortem examination. At the request of Chennai police, her parents sought permission for the post-mortem with the assistance of Renigunta police.
A case has reportedly been registered by Aminjikarai police in Chennai in connection with the incident under Crime No. 42/2026. Police have also taken CCTV footage from the hospital and relevant billing records into their custody as part of the investigation.
Swetha Ghosh had reportedly been working as a Bengali and other-language translator at Chennai Fertility Centre for around seven years. She was responsible for assisting patients arriving from West Bengal, Bangladesh and other regions for IVF treatment.
The incident is reportedly linked to a dispute over billing and cash transactions at the fertility centre. A woman from Bangladesh, identified as Kalpana, had reportedly visited the centre for IVF treatment. During discussions regarding treatment fees and billing details, a communication issue allegedly arose while Swetha was explaining the details to the patient.
According to the allegations, the hospital’s administrative staff and managers, identified as Antony and Balu, subsequently warned or threatened Swetha Ghosh over the matter. She allegedly became distressed and attempted to take her life by jumping from the fourth floor of the building.
The exact circumstances surrounding the incident and the allegations against the hospital staff are yet to be established. Chennai police are investigating the case, including the CCTV footage and billing records.
