78 Telangana Prison Inmates Pass SSC Through NIOS

Hyderabad, August 12, 2026: In a significant step towards education, rehabilitation and social reintegration, 78 inmates of Telangana Prisons have successfully passed the Class X (SSC) examination through the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS).

Following an MoU between the Telangana Prisons Department and NIOS, 108 inmates from Central Prison Cherlapalli, Central Prison Nizamabad and Special Prison for Women, Hyderabad, were enrolled for the SSC programme. They received regular classes, mock tests and pre-board examinations with the support of teachers and prison officials.

The successful candidates include 56 inmates from Cherlapalli, 15 from Nizamabad and 7 from the Special Prison for Women, Hyderabad.

Director General of Prisons & Correctional Services, Telangana, Dr. Soumya Mishra, IPS, distributed certificates to the successful candidates and congratulated them for their determination and perseverance.

Recognising their hard work and commitment, Dr. Soumya Mishra announced Director General’s Remission for all inmates who passed the SSC examination through NIOS as a special incentive.

She further encouraged the successful candidates to pursue Senior Secondary (10+2) through NIOS, after which they can pursue undergraduate B.A. programmes through the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University Study Centre at Central Prison, Cherlapalli. The candidates are also eligible to pursue ITI courses at Cherlapalli Prison.

The programme also highlighted the personal transformation of inmates through education. One successful candidate expressed his determination to study up to LLB and provide free legal aid to poor inmates after becoming a lawyer.

The Telangana Prisons Department said the initiative aims to equip inmates with education, technical skills, confidence and better opportunities for a dignified and self-reliant future.
