Saharanpur Mosque Demolition: Imran Masood Calls Order ‘Unconstitutional’, Vows Legal Challenge
Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh: Congress MP Imran Masood has strongly opposed the demolition of a mosque at the Saharanpur Collectorate complex.
Masood described the action as an attack on constitutional principles. He said the matter would be challenged in the High Court and, if necessary, the Supreme Court.
“They are not just bulldozing a mosque, they are bulldozing the Constitution of this country,” Masood said.
He further called the demolition order “unconstitutional” and said his side would pursue legal remedies.
The mosque was demolished by authorities on Saturday, September 5, after a court upheld an earlier order declaring the structure an illegal construction on government land.
According to officials, the City Magistrate had earlier ordered the removal of the structure. The mosque management committee challenged that decision, but the appeal was dismissed by the District Judge on September 4.
The demolition was carried out under heavy security. Police forces were deployed around the Collectorate area amid concerns over possible tensions following the court ruling.
Imran Masood Questions Demolition Process
The Saharanpur MP has previously raised questions about the legal procedure followed in mosque-related demolition cases.
Masood has argued that authorities must follow due process before taking such action. He has also raised concerns over notice and hearing requirements in earlier disputes involving mosque demolitions in the district.
The latest dispute is now likely to move into higher judicial forums, with Masood indicating that the matter will be taken to the High Court and potentially the Supreme Court.
Administration Defends Action
Authorities have maintained that the mosque was an illegal structure constructed on government property.
Saharanpur DIG Abhishek Singh said the court had rejected the mosque committee’s appeal and that the administration was implementing the judicial decision.
The development has triggered a fresh political debate in Uttar Pradesh over religious structures, government land and the legal process surrounding demolitions.
The case is expected to draw further attention as the legal challenge takes shape.
