Hyderabad | July 12, 2025 –
The face of Hyderabad’s stormwater drains is transforming, thanks to the *HYDRA Monsoon Emergency and Disaster Response Force (DRF) teams. Large-scale *desilting and canal cleaning operations have brought a much-needed breath of relief to residents battling monsoon woes.
Massive Desilting Drives Underway Across the City
From *July 1, HYDRA teams, in coordination with *GHMC and the *Water Board, launched a citywide operation to unclog **drains, culverts, and manholes. Overflowing with plastic waste, thermocol, weeds, and stagnant water, many of these stormwater channels had become health hazards. Now, with *continuous field-level supervision by HYDRA-DRF officials, they are being cleared systematically.
Blocked *manholes and drains, once filled with invasive weeds and domestic garbage, have been cleared using *long-arm JCBs and dedicated waste disposal trucks. Residents living close to major nalas and canals are already feeling the change, witnessing clean waterways and smoother drainage.
“We never thought water could flow this freely again,” said a local resident near Kukatpally’s IDL Cheruvu canal. “This is what HYDRA should always be doing.”
HYDRA Teams in Action: What’s Happening?
- Monsoon readiness squads have been actively clearing flood-prone zones within GHMC limits.
- Special teams are handling desilting of major canals, culverts, and chokepoints.
- Plastic, thermocol, and solid debris are being cleared using advanced excavation tools.
- Waste is being immediately shifted via municipal trucks to prevent re-clogging or odor issues.
- Supervision is being conducted circle-wise to ensure consistent monitoring across zones.
Encroachment Removal in Canals
HYDRA’s operation isn’t just about removing garbage — it’s also targeting illegal encroachments. At *Khairatabad Sridhar Function Hall, encroachments into the *Bulkapur canal were cleared. Similar action was taken at Kukatpally IDL Cheruvu, where unauthorized structures and blocked culverts were removed swiftly.
At the Khairatabad intersection, significant quantities of plastic waste and accumulated debris were lifted and transported. Locals now watch floodwaters pass freely, a sight not seen in years.
A City Breathing Easy
For years, Hyderabad’s monsoon has meant waterlogging, flooded streets, and blocked drains. This year, however, things are beginning to look different. As HYDRA continues its desilting and encroachment-clearing efforts, the drainage system is showing clear signs of improvement.
Residents are not only seeing cleaner canals but also *fewer traffic jams, reduced flooding, and better *sanitation near residential areas. With timely intervention and effective groundwork, HYDRA seems to be delivering what city dwellers have long waited for.
