Rising Stray Dog Menace in Telangana: Over 1.2 Lakh Bite Cases Reported in a Year

Hyderabad, August 25, 2025:

The stray dog menace in Telangana has reached alarming levels, raising serious concerns for public safety. According to official health department data, *1,21,997 people were bitten by stray dogs last year alone. This means an average of *14 dog bite cases every single hour in the state.

The situation continues to worsen this year as well. By the end of *July 2025, at least *87,366 fresh dog bite incidents have already been reported. Disturbingly, the majority of victims are children below 15 years, making them the most vulnerable group.

Adding to the crisis, 13 deaths were recorded last year due to rabies infections caused by untreated or severe dog bites. Despite repeated awareness drives, experts say timely vaccination after a bite is still being neglected in many rural areas.

Animal welfare activists argue that unchecked breeding of stray dogs, lack of sterilization programs, and poor garbage management are the major reasons behind the spike in cases. Meanwhile, citizens demand urgent government intervention to control the situation and protect children from further harm.

What Experts Say

Health experts emphasize that rabies is 100% preventable with timely vaccination, yet it remains a fatal threat due to poor medical awareness. Veterinary specialists also suggest that mass sterilization of stray dogs and effective waste management are essential steps to tackle the problem sustainably.
