Owaisi Criticizes PM Modi Over ‘Hindu-Only’ Staff Policy at Tirupati Temple, Calls Out Waqf Board Bill Provisions

*Hyderabad, India* — AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday expressed strong objections over recent remarks by the newly appointed chairman of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), who stated that only Hindus would be employed at the temple premises. This comment has sparked discussions around religious representation and employment policies within religious institutions.Owaisi pointed out what he perceives as a double standard in the approach of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. Speaking at an event, Owaisi stated, “While the chairman of TTD has announced the Hindu-only staff policy at the Tirupati temple, the NDA government at the Centre is trying to mandate the inclusion of non-Muslim members in Waqf Boards.”The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader highlighted that the TTD Board, which oversees the management of one of the most revered Hindu temples in the country, does not have any non-Hindu members among its 24 trustees. “We are not against the temple’s policy; however, we have an objection to the proposed provision in the Waqf bill which requires the inclusion of two non-Muslim members in the Central Waqf Council. Why is this being mandated?” Owaisi questioned.Drawing a parallel, he emphasized, “TTD is a board dedicated to the Hindu religion, while the Waqf Board serves the interests of the Muslim community. There should be parity. If non-Hindus are not allowed on the TTD Board, why is it necessary to have non-Muslim members on the Waqf Board?”This statement comes amidst broader conversations about religious representation and the autonomy of religious bodies in India. The proposed changes in the Waqf bill by the central government have attracted both support and criticism, with some arguing for inclusivity and others pointing to the need for maintaining the religious nature of specific institutions.
