A devastating road accident near Medina has claimed the lives of at least 42 Umrah pilgrims, with most victims feared to be Indian nationals from Hyderabad. The tragedy occurred when their bus collided with a diesel tanker, causing a massive fire that engulfed the vehicle within minutes.
The Accident Happened Shortly After Midnight
The crash took place around 1:30 am IST near *Mufrihat, as the group was travelling from *Makkah to Medina after completing their Umrah rituals. Local Saudi reports indicate that only one person survived, while the rest of the passengers could not escape the flames.

The Indian Consulate in Jeddah has opened an emergency control room to help families.

Officials also said they are coordinating with the Saudi Haj and Umrah Ministry, local authorities, and the concerned Umrah tour operators.
Community volunteers from the Indian diaspora have reached hospitals to support authorities and help identify victims.
Police Confirm Scale of the Tragedy
Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar stated that 45 people were onboard and there is only one survivor who is now undergoing treatment. He said the full list of victims will be released after verification from Saudi authorities.
Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi Seeks Repatriation of Bodies
Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi said that 42 Indian Umrah pilgrims were on the bus when it caught fire. He confirmed that he has spoken with Abu Mathen George, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Indian Embassy in Riyadh.
Owaisi said the embassy is gathering details from the accident site and coordinating with Saudi officials. He has also shared passenger details with the Ministry of External Affairs and two Hyderabad-based travel agencies.
Owaisi urged External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar to ensure the repatriation of bodies and proper medical care for the lone survivor.
Government and Embassy Working With Telangana Officials
Officials from the Indian Embassy in Riyadh and the Consulate in Jeddah said they are in touch with the Telangana government to support families of the victims. They added that updates will be provided as soon as Saudi authorities release confirmed information.
The incident has triggered shock across Hyderabad, where several families are awaiting news about their relatives.
