Supreme Court Takes Exception to Telangana CM Revanth Reddy’s Comments on K Kavitha Bail

*August 29* — The Supreme Court of India expressed strong disapproval of Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s remarks regarding the court’s decision to grant bail to Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K Kavitha. Reddy, a Congress leader, had alleged that a deal between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and BRS was behind Kavitha’s bail. The three-member bench, including Justices P K Mishra and K V Viswanathan, addressed the issue during a hearing related to a petition seeking the transfer of the 2015 cash-for-vote scam case trial, in which Reddy is an accused. The court emphasized that it operates based on legal principles and conscience, not political influence.”We are not influenced by political comments or criticisms of our orders. Our decisions are based solely on our duty and oath,” the bench stated, while responding to senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, who represented Reddy. In a related decision, the Supreme Court announced it would appoint a special prosecutor to oversee the trial in the cash-for-vote scam case. This move aims to enhance public trust in the judicial process. Justice Gavai affirmed the court’s confidence in the Telangana judiciary but noted the appointment of a special prosecutor to ensure impartiality. The case dates back to May 31, 2015, when Revanth Reddy, then with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau for allegedly offering a ₹50 lakh bribe to MLA Elvis Stephenson to support TDP nominee Vem Narendar Reddy in legislative council elections. The ACB filed charges against Reddy and others under the Prevention of Corruption Act and section 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code in July 2015.The Supreme Court’s decision to appoint a special prosecutor and its remarks underscore the seriousness with which it views the allegations and the importance of maintaining judicial integrity.
