New Delhi, July 18 – In a solemn ceremony today, the Supreme Court of India witnessed the swearing-in of two new judges, Justice N. Kotieshwar Singh and Justice R. Mahadevan. The oath-taking ceremony, presided over by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, marked a significant moment as the apex court expanded its bench to 34 judges after a gap of three months.The appointments come following the retirement of Justices A.S. Bopannalu, which left two vacancies earlier this year. The Supreme Court Collegium, comprising five members, recommended the names of Justice N. Kotieshwar Singh and Justice R. Mahadevan on July 11, adhering to the procedural guidelines set by the Central Government.Notably, the appointment of Justice N. Kotieshwar Singh holds special significance as it marks the first time a judge from the northeastern state of Manipur has been appointed to the Supreme Court. His elevation underscores the Court’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity in its judiciary.Speaking on the occasion, Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud emphasized the importance of upholding justice and the rule of law in these challenging times.
