Hyderabad, July 9, 2025 —
In a major move to tackle urban flooding and improve stormwater infrastructure, HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath has announced a comprehensive plan to develop the Masab Cheruvu to Pedda Ambarpet Nala as a model drainage project.
The announcement was made after a field inspection conducted by the Commissioner along with local MLA Mal Reddy. The visit focused on assessing the current condition of the nala and identifying key bottlenecks causing waterlogging during monsoon seasons.
7.5 Km Nala to Be Widened to Prevent Flooding
Commissioner Ranganath stated that the *nala, stretching 7.5 kilometers, will be widened significantly to ensure *smooth water flow and mitigate the risk of urban floods. The initiative comes after recurring complaints from residents of Masab Cheruvu, Dilawarkhan, and Pedda Ambarpet areas.
He emphasized the importance of long-term urban planning and assured that the project would be developed with a model blueprint, setting a benchmark for similar works across the city.
Crackdown on Encroachments Around Lakes and Drains
A stern warning was issued by the Commissioner, asserting that strict action will be taken against all forms of encroachments on public water bodies, including lakes and nalas. He added that urban water channels are essential for Hyderabad’s ecological balance and cannot be compromised for unauthorized constructions.
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is also expected to play a key role in implementing the anti-encroachment drive and ensuring proper enforcement.
Part of a Larger Urban Development Vision
This project is part of Hyderabad’s broader urban flood management and drainage reform plan. By transforming the Masab Cheruvu–Dilawarkhan–Pedda Ambarpet stretch into a model nala, the administration hopes to set a new standard in sustainable urban infrastructure.
The Commissioner also called on local residents and civic bodies to cooperate in preserving the city’s lakes and stormwater channels. He emphasized that community participation is crucial to protecting natural resources and ensuring long-term urban resilience.
